The Diet Of A Dorado

Dorado is a carnivore as it likes to feast on other fish, invertebrates, larvae, and even zooplanktons. It normally eats during the daytime at irregular intervals. However, it doesn’t miss a sudden opportunity to gorge some more since it seems like a greedy fish with a healthy appetite.

Other than an occasional “free meal” in the form of bait which lures it to feed more, its feeding time is regulated by the weather conditions. Windy, cloudy weather with some rain thrown in is an ideal time for it to hunt. Such weather helps it find more prey to chase.

Since Dorado is found in Tropical regions, such stormy weather is a regular occurrence. Mahi-Mahi does have food preferences, but it does not waste the opportunity to feed on something different. It is an aggressive predator which swims very fast and chases a variety of ocean species.

This includes mammals like turtles. The regular feed of Dorado consists of smaller ocean fish such as triggerfish, but it also likes to feast on youngs of big fish like Dolphin, Tuna, and Mackerel.

It finds some invertebrates like jellyfish, crabs, and squids as palatable too. As you already know that it matures really quickly; this is made possible by the big appetite it has.

Because Mahi-Mahi pillages indiscriminately, it often ends up filling its belly with the trash entangled in the seaweed it feeds from.

Some of the Mahi, when gutted, their stomachs contain everything from plastic wrappers to light bulbs. So, that’s a red flag there all nature lovers must try and avoid by spreading awareness.

Where Can You Find Dorado (Mahi-Mahi)?

Mahi-Mahi, as has been mentioned earlier, is found in the tropical regions of all the world’s oceans and even the Mediterranean Sea. But, if you are interested in digging deep into specificity, you may look up for continent-wise country locations.

Schools of dorado fish are found in Mexico and Florida in North America, Costa Rica, and Panama in Central America. The Canary Islands and Cape Verde in Africa, Spain, and France in Europe, Australia, Madagascar in the Indian Ocean, as well as Tahiti and Hawaii in the Pacific Ocean.

Once you have decided on a general location, you need to know where to look precisely. Dolphin Fish (aka Mahi-Mahi) lives near the surface and mid-water level and does not go deeper than 80m.

You can find schools of these swimming in warmer water along the coastal line as well as in the open waters. You can spot them if you look carefully around the free-floating seaweeds in the area, as they’re often hunting small fish and larvae hiding underneath.

When is the Best Time to Fish for Dorado (Mahi-Mahi)?

Dorado is available abundantly all year round still; in some places taking a weather advisory is better, like in Australia, where Summer starts in December.

Since our Golden beauty is accustomed to temperate conditions, the ideal time for fishing in the southern hemisphere is in January and February. The weather at that time mimics the Tropical climate as it is humid and warm with a temperature drop of 20°F between day and night.

In Florida, on the other hand, it is better to go Mahi-Mahi fishing in June and July. In Central America, which is Tropical, any time of the year is fine for golden dorado fishing.

But the Mahi numbers decline in the dry season, which starts in December and ends in April. The numbers pick up again in the rainy season, starting in May. The rain flushes sea debris out, and the Golden girl loves to feast on the “delights” taking refuge underneath.

How To Catch Dorado? Mahi-Mahi Fishing.

There are three common ways to catch this fish. You can find relevant details as under.

Trolling:

In this method of fishing, you will have to ride a boat. A bait or lure is tied to the back of a moving boat with strings. It is supposed to entice the Mahi swimming nearby into biting one.

The advantage of this method lies in the amount of area a boat can cover, maximizing your chance of having a good catch. There are many gadgets and tools used to roll out the lures over a bigger area away from the boat.

This will ensure a number of lures trolled simultaneously to increase your odds of catching more fish. There are two types of lures you can use while trolling for Mahi-Mahi; plugs and surface lures.

Line of Sight Fishing:

Dorado is an agile fish that swims so fast that you will find yourself outrun by it if you are using the traditional reel. But insight fishing, you are on a boat stationed in the middle of the ocean, and you are dropping the bait via a fishing rod.

This method will work for you if you want to fish around floating debris on a stationary boat. You can drop your bait quite near the hidden Mahi and engage its attention. Since it’s a greedy fish, chances are it won’t pass on a free meal.

Nowadays, not just spiky rods but tied-up projectiles are also fired underwater to impale fish. The use of spear guns extended the range of Spearfishing beyond shallow waters. In Some Places, diving aided by underwater breathing gear is employed to target deep ocean fish, which are then speared.

Spearfishing different species require different techniques and gears. For spearing Dorado, mostly a Polespear is used, which has a slip tip. When the Slip tip pierces the dorado, it gets separated from the pole and threads the fish between the tip and end of the spear.

Before Spearfishing, you must locate the golden Dorado first. You are likely to find it around the debris. Keep the target insight.

If you can hold your breath and dive down, the Mahi will follow you. Then get into the horizontal position and load the pole spear.
